The primary mentor for this fellowship will be Kristin R. Archer, DPT, PhD,1 Associate Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Archer has three ongoing, multi-center pragmatic trials funded by the Department of Defense (DoD), Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), and Stanford Medicine Clinical Excellence Research Center. These trials are examining the effectiveness of psychologically-informed physical therapy (PIPT) in patients after traumatic lower-extremity injury (CBPT-TRAUMA Trial), comparing shared-decision making and cognitive-behavioral therapy in patients who are on chronic opioid therapy (INSPIRE Trial),2 and examining the effectiveness of early physical therapy in patients with acute spine pain (SPINE-CARE Trial).3 In addition, Dr. Archer oversees the coordinating center for a nationwide spine surgery registry (Quality Outcomes Database),4 which has over 10,000 patients undergoing lumbar or cervical surgical procedures with complete 12-month follow-up data. The registry as well as a completed PCORI-funded trial5 on PIPT after spine surgery allows numerous opportunities for secondary analyses.
This postdoctoral fellowship will be focused on applied experience with large pragmatic trials and supporting the analysis of registry and trial data, particularly in regard to spine surgery and associated outcomes. The fellowship position is for 2 years (contingent on funding and satisfactory performance). and will be located at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The fellow will be provided with didactic training, travel support, information resources, and secretarial or technical support. The fellow will receive health benefits, vacation days and sick days. CoHSTAR fellows receive a stipend of $58,000 and funds for training related expenses.
Who is Eligible?
Qualified candidates will be physical therapists with advanced graduate training (PhD, ScD, DrPH) completed in the last 5 years. In keeping with Foundation requirements, viable candidates must be citizens, or noncitizen nationals, of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment. We are particularly interested in individuals with strong analytic and writing skills who are interested in developing the skills and competencies of a health services researcher. Applicants with experience in the analysis of electronic health record data and/or other large data are preferred.
