Alum captures Broadway legend on film
A COM alumna's directorial debut offers unprecedented actress to Elaine Strich, an actress most recently known for her role as Alec Baldwin's mother on NBC's 30 Rock.
Chiemi Karasawa, (COM '90) met Stritch in while working as a script supervisor on the set of the John Turturro film Romance and Cigarettes. Their paths crossed again years later in a hair salon frequented by the two women, where Karasawa decided to convince Stritch to let her film a documentary about her.
The result? An honest and hilarious look at a Broadway legend with a career spanning seven decades:
The filmmaker had unprecedented access to the actress, following her over 18 months as she completed a national tour of her one-woman show, rehearsed and performed a new show of Sondheim songs at her longtime home at the Carlyle Hotel in New York, and amidst growing health scares, made the decision to return to Michigan to be closer to family.
