COM Announces Spring Slate of Virtual Events

Hand-drawn illustration of a laptop, webcam, microphone and other odds and ends. The pandemic moved COM classes online, and naturally the college’s public events have followed. Beginning today, the College of Communication will offer a free series of live and recorded lectures, conversations and gatherings -- all online. The following list will be updated as new events are added:

Toward Robot Humanization: Exploring Relational Dynamics & Perceptions of Robots & Artificial Intelligence

Kate Mays, doctoral candidate in COM’s Division of Emerging Media Studies, will review her research on the social and relational perceptions of robots and AI. Based on a series of surveys (conducted with Dr. James Katz), she draws on multiple models and theories­—uncanny valley, media equation, apparatgeist, social distance, and social identity—to develop a framework for exploring the social implications of these technologies.
