COM students excel in video at Student Production Awards

COM students took home five awards and four honorable mentions at the annual Student Production Awards sponsored by the Boston/New England chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Four of the honors were from BUTV10 productions in news, sports, and fictional work. BUTV10 is Boston University’s student-run production network and distribution service, based in COM. A fifth winner was produced by COM’s Hothouse Productions, now known as Real World Productions.

“I am extremely proud of the work our BUTV10 teams put in over the past year,” says Tina McDuffie, associate professor of the practice in journalism and BUTV10 faculty adviser. “They deserve the recognition. These students are hard working, focused & talented. It’s a pleasure to see them both learning & thriving.”

Students awarded for the BUTV10 production “Your Vote, Your Voice” attributed their win to the time and dedication each of their teammates put into the show during the months leading up to the broadcast.

“I’m immensely proud of the wonderful work this team did. I remember before we went live, we huddled them up and told them that no matter what happened, we were so proud of everything they had done,” Co-Producer Evan Jimenez (COM ’23) says. “When you join BUTV10’s news department, you dream of getting to produce these shows. These are the big ones, the ones that pull in awards.”

Co-Producer and Reporter Stephannie Joseph (COM ’23, CAS ’23) said putting together the broadcast was not an easy feat, but it was worth the effort.

“I remember running out of class on election night and hopping straight on the T to meet my co-producers at Governor Healey’s election party. I was carrying equipment on my shoulder and wearing heels, but that didn’t phase me,” Joseph says. “While we were in one place, another team of reporters was getting work done in another.”

Anchor Laney Broussard (COM ’24) adds: “I’ve wanted to anchor this show since I first came to Boston University. The best part of this whole thing for me was seeing that goal I had set for myself come true. This was a culmination of all the hard work we put into the BUTV program during our college experience, so I’m glad this award speaks to this legacy we have left.”

Students were invited to the 46th Boston/New England Emmy Awards Gala on Saturday, June 10 to celebrate their awards.
