Career Spotlight

What has your career/education path been like since graduating?
My career path has woven in and out of several areas of communication, first social media and content strategy, followed now by more a traditional marketing role. While neither are what I thought I would be doing when I first entered COM, I'm glad for where I've been and absolutely love what I'm doing now. I encourage others to keep their mind open as well.
Why did you choose your particular field of study at COM?
I initially chose PR because I liked the idea of "making the news" for a company. I love writing, but also wanted to work for a brand not a publication—so in my mind PR was the perfect marriage of journalism and marketing.
What skills from the program have you found most valuable?
I really use a wide variety of skills from COM—from writing for communications to research and graphic design. I think being a strong writer, and learning how words can shape perceptions, has been one of my biggest takeaways. I left undergrad knowing how to write a research paper, but I left COM knowing how to write a positioning statement. The latter has been much more valuable for what I do now.
