The future of sports imagined at the first-ever summit: Play It Forward

Boston is known as a sports and a college town but rarely have the leaders of these industries met. That will change April 15th, the eve of the Boston Marathon weekend, when the inaugural BU Sports Communication Summit; Play It Forward will be held at Agganis Arena, hosted by award-winning sports journalist and BU lecturer Andrea Kremer. Sponsored by Boston University’s College of Communication, there is no better time or place – Marathon weekend, along the route, at the home of top-ranked collegiate teams – to consider how sports is much more than just a pastime.

The future, not the past, will be addressed by an eclectic group of industry leaders, athletes and experts predicting what’s next during panels about sports safety, law, tech and journalism. Attendees will be given access to experts from a variety of disciplines, all stakeholders in the sports industry

“I’m thrilled we can share our vision of the future in sports communication, featuring a breadth of knowledge that far exceeds what happens on the field or on the court," said Andrea Kremer, Summit Host and Andrew R. Lack Fellow at Boston University. "Sports touches so many other areas of interest so it behooves our students to be conversant in topics related to safety, technology, law to create a well rounded journalist."

The summit will be held in the exclusive, casual Club Room at Agganis Arena, where participants can learn candid insights, network and even discover the favorite workout tunes of sports titans.

“The Boston University College of Communication is delighted to host Play it Forward,” said Tom Fiedler, Dean of Boston University’s College of Communication. “Through a series of lively panel presentations featuring some of sports’ biggest names and leading experts, we hope to generate an important and fun conversation about how fast-changing media technologies are impacting the way sports are played and communicated to the public. It’s a natural for this town and a natural for this college, one of the nation’s biggest and best in its field.”

The daylong summit will kick off with the 9:30 a.m. event “Breakfast with Champions,” with Red Sox CEO Tom Werner, New England Patriots’ Hall of Famer Andre Tippett, and Boston Celtics’ Chief Marketing Officer Shawn Sullivan. What’s next will be the theme of subsequent panels, featuring high-profile sports agents, athletes, experts, executives and journalists. Early-bird registration rates begin for BU students and faculty February 1 and regular registration is open to the public, beginning February 15th.

Play It Forward will take place on the Friday, April 15, 2016 in the Club Room at Agganis Arena, Boston University. The summit is open to all students, faculty, and alumni, including the general public.
