Current Student Registration Only
Use the MyBUStudent Portal to plan your schedule and register for classes each semester. Students will register for their fall 2024 courses on MyBU Student (https://student.bu.edu/MyBU/). The fall 2024 course schedule builder became available on March 6, 2024.
What to do before registering for classes:
- Please view your program’s curriculum. It is the student’s responsibility to enroll in courses required for degree completion.
- If you are unsure if a required class will be offered in a future semester,
- contact the department administrator.
- To ADD/DROP or CHANGE SECTIONS a student must use the MyBU Student Portal and may only do so on a space-available basis (for adding or changing a section).
- COM considers classes at the 500 level and above (500-900) graduate-level. Please check the undergraduate and graduate-level option in the MyBU Portal. Classes at the 500 level may be cross-listed/enrolled for undergraduate and graduate students.
- If you cannot find a class or if the class has a hold, please view all prerequisites required for the course. You may need to contact the department administrator to register for a class outside your department (Journalism, Film and Television, Mass Communication).
- Classes do have a limited number of seats so it is important to register for classes on the first day of registration.
- Once a class is full, it is not possible to arrange an additional seat in a class.
- Please view the Withdrawal and Tuition Refund Schedule for each semester.
Directions to register for classes through the Student Portal:
Search for classes using Class Search, place them in the Schedule Builder to compare potential options, and validate that you can register for your preferred classes in the Shopping Cart. Using these planning tools and putting classes in your Shopping Cart will make your registration appointment faster and easier. The MyBU Student Portal has training videos and knowledge articles to assist you. In Particular, we suggest you watch the video recording of “Preparing for Registration” to familiarize yourself with the new registration process.
Enrollment Status
Full-time students must maintain a minimum of 12 credits/3 classes per semester. Graduate students may enroll in a maximum of 18 credits/4 classes per semester.
Please email kbring10@bu.edu or helu@bu.edu if you plan to enroll in more than 18 credits to waive any additional tuition charges to your Student Account. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to overload beyond 18 credits.
Part-time students must maintain a minimum of 1-2 credits/one class and cannot exceed a maximum of 11 credits per semester.
Information regarding tuition and fees can be found here.
International students must maintain full-time student status (12+ credits). International students may only study part-time in their final semester before graduation.
Program Extension
Any student who would like to extend their program to a fourth, part-time semester must plan their schedule accordingly.
- Review your academic curriculum. You must plan to save an academic requirement OR a credit to complete to extend your program. For example, an MS advertising student, who plans to extend their program to a final, fourth semester must save a required course such as CM721 Advertising Management to complete in their final semester OR save a remaining credit requirement (be below 48 credits before their final spring semester).
- Complete an application for graduation indicating your extended graduation date in your third semester.
- International Students: Apply for Reduced Course Load with the ISSO.
- International Students: Review the end date on your I-20 form. Do you need to update your I-20 to reflect the extension?
- International Students: Do not apply for Optional Practical Training until you confirm your graduation date.
