COM Technical Facilities & Access Policies

COM Main Building (640 Commonwealth Ave) Building Hours

When Classes are in Session: Weekdays 7:30am – 10pm
Semester Breaks: Weekdays 9am – 5pm
Weekends, Holidays, and BU Intersession: Closed

Cardswipe access to 640 Comm Ave: Every Day 6am – Midnight; Must leave building by 1am.
All students currently enrolled in COM classes are automatically provided swipe access. Cardswipe access is disabled between semesters.

Most COM Classrooms are generally open and available for walk-in use by the COM Community when not otherwise reserved.

If space is locked, please see instructions below. Do not call BU Facilities Department (FMP) to request space access or an emergency unlock. 

COM Tech Staff are located throughout the building.
The COM Calendar shows when spaces are reserved.
Reservations can be made online for specialty facilities within COM.

Specialty Spaces

Student Lounge

Collaborative seating,, and B&W Printer for COM Students
Available To: COM Community
Hours: Available whenever building is open.
Reservations: Not Reserved
Notes: Occasionally closed for special events.

Edit Lab 338

General Purpose computer lab with 4 iMac workstations, 2 color accurate monitors, a COM Color Printer, and a Photo Scanner
Available To: Current COM Students Only
Reservations: Individual Workstation reservations are encouraged
Hours: Available whenever building is open or via after-hours cardswipe access.
Access Procedure: Lab is unlocked when available

Studio 100

Medium Sized “Black Box” Studio for Productions, Auditions, Photoshoots, etc.
Available To: Current COM Students Only
Reservations: Required for all users. See Tech Director Brad Fernandes to request a reservation
Hours: Weekdays 8am – 9pm, Weekends by prior arrangement with Technology Director (No access other times)
Access Procedure: If reserved, Ask a COM Tech Staff member for access and/or technical assistance

Podcast Production Suites:

4-Mic (Room 325)

High quality interview recording for 1-4 people and/or Phone Calls. Records to computer in the room; no student laptop connections. 
Available To: Current COM Students Only working on assigned class projects
Reservations: Reservations Required for all users. Reserve Online No Access by students/faculty outside of COM.
Hours: Weekdays 8am – 9pm, No Holiday Access
Access Procedure: If Reserved, Ask a COM Tech Staffer for access and/or technical assistance

4-Mic  (Room 333)

High quality interview recording for 1-4 people. Records to computer in the studio or a laptop can be connected via USB. No telephone interface.
Available To: COM Community (Via reservations), Limited access to BU Community — Contact COM Technology staff to discuss request.
Reservations: Reservations Required for all users – Reserve Online
Hours: Weekdays 8am – 9pm, No Holiday Access
Access Procedure: Door will unlock via tap of BU ID of the person who make reservation.

Voiceover Recording Booth (Room 334C)

Sound reinforced booth & audio recorder for voiceover and narration recording
Available To: Current COM Students Only
Reservations: Reservations Required for all users – Reserve Online
Hours: Weekdays 8am – 9pm, No Weekend Access (No access other times)
Access Procedure: If locked, Ask a COM Tech Staffer for access and/or technical assistance

Individual Edit Bays & Suites (Room 337 Suites)

Specialty Edit spaces with Mac Studios computer, Dual 24″ Monitors, speakers, and microphone. Software: Resolve Studio & Adobe Suite.  Suitable for 1-3 people per bay.
Available To: Current COM Students working on Assigned Coursework only
Reservations: Reservations Required for all users – Reserve Online
Hours: Weekdays 8am – 9pm, No Weekend Access (No access other times)
Access Procedure: Hallway Door will unlock via tap of BU ID of the person who make reservation.

Studio East (Room 326B)

1200 square-foot 3-Camera TV & Production Studio
Available To: Students in select FTV classes & approved BUTV10 Shows
Reservations: Reservations Required for All Users – See Tech Ops Manager Jake Kassen to request a reservation
Hours: Weekdays 8am – 9pm, Weekend access limited to prior arrangements and cardswipe access. (No access other times)
Access Procedure: Control room door will unlock with swipe of BU ID of the person who reserved the studio.

Studio West (Room 327)

Professional News & Interview Studio
Available To: Students in select Journalism classes & approved BUTV10 Shows Only
Reservations: Reservations Required for All Users – See Tech Ops Manager Jake Kassen to request a reservation
Hours: Weekdays 8am – 9pm, Weekend access limited to prior arrangements and cardswipe access. (No access other times)
Access Procedure: Control room door will unlock with swipe of BU ID of the person who reserved the studio.

Babcock Studios (Located on West Campus)

300 Babcock St.
2900 square-foot soundstage for Film & TV Courses
Available To: FTV Classes
Reservations: Reservations Required – See Brad Fernandes

WTBU Studios

BU’s Student Run Radio Station
Available To: Anyone affiliated with Boston University may apply to join station staff.
Access: WTBU controls access to station facilities; see station Admin for swipe access. Technical problems should be reported to Jake Kassen.
