Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 5/31/19

During the weekend of June 1st

  • The City of Boston has issued a permit allowing GSDM to temporarily close East Newton Street at its intersection with Albany Street on Saturday, June 1. This closure will allow crews to remove the temporary steel plate over the trench containing the new storm water drain, backfill the area, and patch the asphalt. Access to GSDM will not be affected by this operation.
  • Workers will continue applying spray-on fireproofing material on the new structural beams and columns in the seven-story west addition.
  • Construction of exterior walls for both the west and north additions will continue, including the installation of metal stud framing to support the different exterior façade finishes.
  • GSDM will also take delivery of elevator equipment, machinery, and materials for the two new student, resident, faculty, and staff elevators—a project milestone.

During the weekend of June 3rd

  • The work platforms at the south, east, and north sides of the existing GSDM building will continue to support crews working on the new building façades. Drilling will continue on all three sides of the building for the installation of clips used to hold the new façades in place. Construction of additional work platforms will begin along the north addition.
  • Installation of new windows will continue on the south elevation, with the windows installed from the outside over the existing windows.
  • In the west connector spaces, installation of new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure will continue for new systems serving the seven-story west addition.
  • Workers will also continue applying spray-on fireproofing material on the new structural beams and columns in the seven-story west addition.
  • Crews will continue installing metal stud framing and exterior wall sheathing on the new additions toward making the additions weathertight (fully enclosed from the elements).
  • Buildout of the two new student, resident, faculty, and staff elevators in the northwest corner of the west addition will continue.
  • Following the completion of the new masonry block walls in the basement, crews will begin assembling formwork and installing rebar for the new ramp connecting the new mechanical room in the basement of the north addition to the existing GSDM basement.
