Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 7/24/20

During the weekend of July 25:

  • On Saturday, East Newton Street will be temporarily closed to traffic while workers set up a crane to remove existing elevator machinery in the GSDM building, as part of the upgrades to existing elevators, and to load new equipment onto the roof. NOTE: The GSDM COVID-19 screening tent has been temporarily relocated to Albany Street during this time.
  • Plumbing crews will be resuming work inside the GSDM building on Saturday, making coring holes for plumbing and electrical infrastructure for the new dental chairs from the fifth floor to the fourth floor in the existing Patient Treatment Center. This work will continue on Saturdays through the end of August.
  • Installation of the new microscopes in the third-floor Simulated Learning Center (SLC) will begin on Saturday and will continue into the week of July 27 in advance of the start of classes in the SLC beginning August 3.

During the week starting July 27:

  • Work in the existing offices in the present fourth-floor Patient Treatment Center will be completed two days earlier than scheduled, and the area was scheduled to be turned over to GSDM at the end of the day on Friday, July 24. Crews will be moving their operations to the next work area on the fourth floor and will set up protection for the existing equipment and furniture while mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work commences in this area.
  • Installation of the new roof on the existing GSDM building is tentatively scheduled to begin this week. This is a several-month process during which a crane will often be set up along the north side of the GSDM building to support these operations.
  • Installation of the decorative granite finishes for the newly installed Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine monument sign on Albany Street will continue this week.
  • Inside the existing bathrooms, wall and floor tile installation will begin on the first three floors of the existing building. Drywall construction will continue on the upper four floors of this building and will be followed by painting.
  • In the existing fifth-floor Patient Treatment Center, placement of new electrical and plumbing systems will continue throughout the space. Workers will also continue placing mechanical ductwork in the ceilings, in tandem with the installation of overhead sprinkler pipes. Metal-stud framing will continue in conjunction with the installation of door frames and drywall. Testing on the plumbing systems serving the new dental chairs, laboratories, and dispensary will occur throughout the week.
  • Upgrades to the existing elevators will continue, with workers making modifications to the roof to create new openings for ductwork to the shaft.

Please consult these additional resources as needed:

  • GSDM COVID-19 information: http://www.bu.edu/dental/covid-19-information/. This webpage is a repository of all communications issued to the school community by the GSDM leadership. It also includes links to the Boston University and Boston University Medical Campus COVID-19 websites.

Please be sure to note all directional signage and markings within the building as you navigate in and around GSDM. Circulation may be revised to accommodate both construction and proper social distancing as the school continues to evolve plans and operations for the phased re-opening and increased volume of people in the school. These actions align with the COVID-19 guidelines issued by state regulatory agencies and by Boston University.

As a reminder, it is important that everyone be mindful about using the designated stairs for upward or downward travel between floors. This is critical to maintaining proper distancing and avoiding crossing paths with others in a narrow area. Each stair is marked with signage to designate the permissible direction of travel.

We hope that you remain safe and healthy. As always, your safety is imperative!
