PDC Leads COVID-19 Signage Efforts
Jeff Hoseth, Max Noe, and David Flynn of Planning, Design & Construction (PDC) are coordinating the procurement and installation of COVID-19 signage across BU’s three campuses. To date, north of 65,000 signs are needed, of which over 50,000 have been ordered. The team is working to get all signage for all phases of re-opening our campuses installed by end of August. While July focused on completing signage for phases 1-3, phase 4 signage is targeted to be completed by August 31st, just in time for classroom teaching and residential community activities to begin.
The first phase of signage was installed with interim paper signs for the reactivation of research activities and is getting re-done with PVC and vinyl materials. Phase two and three of signage are also made of more permanent signage material as well as peel and stick applications for floor markers and furniture to assure people don’t sit on areas marked.
All signage is being manufactured by three sign vendors who are also installing them as they are made on all campuses. In addition, four general contractors are assisting with the installation of signage.
Jeff, Max, and David are working with Building Coordinators to determine how many COVID-19 signs need to be made and where these signs should go. Guided by Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), who reviews signage locations and answer questions with recommendations on their placement, the team uses floors plans within space@BU(FM:Systems) to communicate signage locations. Assigned project managers within PDC also played a key role in working with Building Coordinators to help them develop their sign orders and plans.
While signage efforts are in place, FMO staff is analyzing the readiness of building HVAC and other mechanical systems. Once EHS and FMO complete their reviews, if accepted, each building is given specific activation authorization by the Office of the CPO Vice President.
