Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 10/23/20

During the weekend of October 24:

  • On Saturday, East Newton Street will be closed to vehicular traffic while a crane is set up to temporarily remove two of the existing exhaust fans on the roof; this will allow workers to install new frames underneath the fans and then patch in the new roofing in those locations. Once the roofing installation is completed, the exhaust fans will be reinstalled.

During the week starting October 26:

  • There will be no night-shift work this week.
  • Inspection of the new traffic signal and associated work at Albany and East Newton Streets is scheduled for Tuesday of this week by the Boston Transportation Department.
  • A crane will continue in place as needed on the north side of the GSDM building, to support both the removal of the building’s existing roof and insulation and the installation of the new roof system. This work will be continuous over the next one to two weeks, depending on the weather.
  • Renovation work will continue in the existing fifth-floor patient treatment center, with installation of audiovisual equipment, final painting touch-ups, application of sealant around new fixtures, and completion of final details on the treatment-center casework.
  • Dentsply Sirona will be completing installation of the new Teneo dental chairs in the existing patient treatment center. A final delivery of Dentsply Sirona dental equipment is expected by the end of the week, and will allow for cabling to the Teneo chairs to be completed from below the floor in the fourth-floor patient treatment center. This cabling work will occur off-hours so as not to disturb operations and patient care on the fourth floor.
  • Upgrades to the existing elevators will continue, with crews focusing on completing the new cab and making final adjustments in preparation for formal state inspection of the first renovated elevator by mid-week.

Please consult these additional resources as needed:

  • GSDM COVID-19 information: http://www.bu.edu/dental/covid-19-information/. This webpage is a repository of all communications issued to the school community by the GSDM leadership. It also includes links to the Boston University and Boston University Medical Campus COVID-19 websites.

Please be sure to note all directional signage and markings within the GSDM building, and the designated stairs for travel between floors. Each stairway is marked with signage that shows the permissible direction of travel. Circulation may be revised to accommodate both construction and proper physical distancing as the school continues to evolve plans and operations for the phased re-opening and increased number of people in the school. These actions align with the COVID-19 guidelines issued by state regulatory agencies and by Boston University.

We hope that you remain safe and healthy. As always, your safety is imperative!
