Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 10/30/20
During the weekend of October 31:
- On both Saturday and Sunday, weather-depending, crews will be working on the roof to make up for lost work days this week due to rain.
- On Sunday, November 1, electricians will be connecting cables to the fifth-floor newly-installed dental chairs from the floor below, in the fourth-floor patient treatment center. This cabling work is being performed during off-hours so as not to disturb operations and patient care on the fourth floor.
- At 7 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, a small crew will be onsite accompanying the Boston Fire Department to witness the testing of the new fire alarm system installed in the fifth-floor patient treatment center—the first of several inspections required to obtain the Phase 3 temporary certificate of occupancy.
During the week starting November 2:
- There will be no night-shift work this week.
- A crane will be in place as needed on the north side of the GSDM building, to support both the removal of the building’s existing roof and insulation and the installation of the new roof system. This work will be continuous over the next seven to ten days, again depending on the weather.
- On Wednesday, November 4, power, controls, and ductwork will be disconnected from the existing rooftop exhaust fans on the north side of the GSDM building, to permit the temporary removal of these fans. A crane will transport three of the exhaust fans from the rooftop to the ground, while workers install new base frames underneath the fans and then patch in new roofing in those locations. Once the roofing installation is completed, the exhaust fans will be reinstalled.
- As renovation work nears completion in the existing fifth-floor patient treatment center, workers will be completing final touches throughout the floor, including touch-up painting, and cleaning.
- Upgrades to the existing elevators will continue, with crews focusing on final adjustments and pre-testing in preparation for the State Elevator Inspection that was postponed from last week.
- Final mechanical, electrical, and plumbing inspections by the City of Boston building inspectors will take place in the fifth-floor patient treatment center this week. These inspections are the next critical milestones for obtaining the temporary certificate of occupancy for Phase 3 of this four-phase building project.

Please be sure to note all directional signage and markings within the GSDM building, and the designated stairs for travel between floors. Each stairway is marked with signage that shows the permissible direction of travel. Circulation may be revised to accommodate both construction and proper physical distancing as the school continues to evolve plans and operations for the phased re-opening and increased number of people in the school. These actions align with the COVID-19 guidelines issued by state regulatory agencies and by Boston University.
We hope that you remain safe and healthy. As always, your safety is imperative!
