Center for Computing & Data Sciences – Construction Update – 12/3/20

The final few reinforcing bars and formwork installed in advance of Saturday’s concrete placement.

During the weekend of December 5th

  • Beginning early Saturday, the project will be placing approximately 4,500 cubic yards of concrete for the mat slab at the tower. This activity will be one of the city’s largest continuous concrete placements. Due to the nature of this continuous concrete placement and the time it will require, the City of Boston has permitted project hours to be extended on Saturday, December 5. Work will begin at 2 am, Saturday, and conclude by midnight, Sunday, which is more than 20 consecutive hours. About 450 concrete trucks will be involved in the project; the trucks will access the construction site via Commonwealth Avenue and Bay State Road. Aspects of the concrete placement will produce noise that may be disruptive to the community.
  • Three concrete pumps will be set up on site, one in the alleyway just off of Granby Street, one on Granby Street, and one off of Commonwealth Avenue. Concrete trucks serving these pumps will be staged along Commonwealth Avenue, Granby Street, and Bay State Road. Please note that to maintain a travel lane along Granby Street, the parking meters along the west side will be eliminated for the day.
  • It is understood the timing of this activity is unfortunate, however, to ensure the integrity of the concrete foundation for the 19-story tower above it is critical the placement be continuous.
  • As a result of the volume of concrete required for this placement, three concrete plants in the greater Boston area are shutting down all other operations in order to provide the necessary service this activity will require, closing these concrete plants is only achievable on a Saturday.

During the week of December 7th

  • Preparations for the concrete placement of the ground floor slab in the podium will continue as rebar, formwork, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing sleeves are installed in advance of the concrete placement scheduled for the second half of the week.
  • Following the placement of the tower’s mat slab, the focus will now turn to formwork and rebar installation for the walls of the tower’s core.
  • Removal of the support of excavation bracing will begin, allowing backfilling against the podium foundation walls will begin.
  • Please be aware of all directional signage, as pedestrian travel paths may be altered. We will continue to provide you with up to date information via these notifications.
