Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 12/18/20

During the weekend of December 19:
- On Saturday, December 19, East Newton Street will be closed to vehicular traffic, while a crane is set up to remove the existing elevator equipment from the second of the two existing elevators that are being renovated, and place a new motor into the same elevator. This will be the final large crane required for the project.
- Also on Saturday, the third phase of microscope replacement will take place in the Postdoctoral Endodontics Patient Treatment Center on the existing second floor of 635 Albany Street. A crew will install two more of the remaining six new microscopes. The affected patient treatment rooms will be ready for patient care on Monday morning, December 21.
During the week starting December 21:
- From Sunday, December 20, through Wednesday, December 23, night-shift work will continue from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Workers will continue minor demolition activities and removal of demolished materials from GSDM’s sixth floor. Additionally, with waste pipe replacement work now completed throughout GSDM, final drywall patching and painting will be done at work locations on the second, third, and fourth floors.
- Work on Phase 4 renovation of the sixth-floor patient treatment center will continue this week, with the removal of the existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems prior to the start of major demolition and hazardous-material removal during the school’s winter intersession.
- Intersession work will begin with patching, taping, and sanding of the drywall in the Stair 2 stairwell at locations where large vertical ductwork was removed earlier in the month. This will be followed by the removal of the old hand railings and the installation of the new hand railing system in Stair 2.
- Also during intersession, the third-floor corridor in the new addition will be covered and protected in preparation for removing the existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems above the ceilings.
- Upgrades to the existing second elevator will continue, with crews working in the elevator machine room on the building’s penthouse level. Power and fire alarm systems for the newly installed smoke guards at each floor will be connected.

- GSDM COVID-19 information: http://www.bu.edu/dental/covid-19-information/. This web page is a repository of all communications issued to the school community by the GSDM leadership. It also includes links to the Boston University and Boston University Medical Campus COVID-19 websites.
Prior to leaving for intersession, please be sure to note all directional signage and markings within the GSDM building, and the designated stairs for travel between floors. Each stairway is marked with signage that shows the permissible direction of travel. Circulation may be revised to accommodate both construction and proper physical distancing as the school continues to evolve plans and operations for the phased re-opening and increased number of people in the school. These actions align with the COVID-19 guidelines issued by state regulatory agencies and by Boston University.
We hope that you remain safe and healthy, and that you enjoy the holiday season.
