Kilachand Hall Phase 2 – Construction Update – 4/14/23

General Project Information

  • Daily Work Hours from 7 am – 3 pm.
  • The Traffic Management Plan for the project has been approved by the Boston Transportation Department and is in place.
    • Relocated accessible parking spaces posted for use on 6/29 (in front of 81 and 83 Bay State Road).
    • Jersey barrier site containment in place, pedestrian walkway also in place and operational. The city sidewalk in front of Kilachand Hall is permitted to be used as part of the construction site limits.
    • A Boston police detail is on site daily assisting with traffic control and safety.
    • Bike lane is fully functional in front of Kilachand Hall.
  • BU parking spots directly behind Kilachand Hall on Back Street remain a “no parking zone”. This will continue for the project duration to maintain an adequate drive lane for local traffic on Back Street and allow the construction team to safely contain a work area north of the dormitory.

Saturday, April 15th

  • There will be no work this weekend due to the marathon preparation in and around Kenmore Square.

Occupant Impacts: Week of April 17th

  • The south elevation scaffolding will start coming down on Friday, 4/21. The removal will continue up to the quiet study and exam period on Friday, 5/3. Rooms -06L/R, -07L/R, -08L/R and -09R will be near this work.
  • The final washdown of the remainder of the west, north, and east façades will start on Tuesday, 4/18, and will continue up to the start of the quiet study and exam period on Friday, 5/3. Residence Life will be notifying those affected by the washdown process, which will require windows in each area to be closed during work hours.

During the week of April 17th

  • The construction site will be closed on Monday, 4/17 for Patriots Day.
  • Riggs Masonry is working on washing down the north elevation façade as well as a miscellaneous punch list for the west elevation.
  • Badd Bros will be finishing up the landings and stringers from level 2 to level 1 and installing the new generator platform steel.
  • Royal Steam HVAC is continuing to build out the level 9 mechanical room and installing the variant refrigerant flow (VRF) system piping on level 9.
  • Murphy Electric is continuing with rough work on levels 8 and 9, including pulling under floor MC cable, in-wall rough work at exterior knee walls, and running overhead conduit on level 9. They will also be building out the electrical panels in the level 9 mechanical room and will start to work on the underground feeders to the new emergency generator in the west alley.
  • Mass Acoustics will be continuing with the raised floor framing and knee wall framing on level 9, the spray foam insulation of exterior wall locations, and exterior wall tie-ins. They will also rebuild around steel reinforcement on level 8 and work on fire-stopping at elevator frame headers in the hoist way. The level 1 stair core shaft wall installation should also get underway this week.
  • Salem Glass will continue with sealant at the perimeter of the curtain wall frames and install the finish trim cover.
  • Egan Painting is continuing with primer and the first coats of paint in select areas of level 8.
  • Titan continues with the roof installation in all areas as well as the metal panel, gutter, and flashing installation.
  • ThyssenKrupp Elevator mechanics are continuing with the cab finishes and the lobby control panels.
  • Riggs Masonry will complete the reinforcement and concrete at the new generator pad in the west alley.
  • Consigli/Riggs team is on site providing cleaning, site support, and supervision.

 

The raised floor installation continues on level 9. Curtain wall glass is being installed.
