Lingering Effects of SARS-CoV-2 Infection

While SARS-CoV-2 has demonstrated remarkable tenacity in terms of successfully navigating pharmaceutical as well as non-pharmaceutical interventions with waves of new variants throughout this pandemic, preliminary studies also report that approximately 1/3 of those infected with SARS-CoV-2 remain symptomatic four or more months after the infection, with continued symptoms that negatively impact daily functioning, regardless of the severity of the initial acute infection. NEW: NCATS Translational Science Course: Translational Science in the COVID-19 Pandemic: Accelerating and Enhancing Our Response Across Pre-Clinical, Clinical, and Population Health Research

Dates: October 25-December 10, 2021.

The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES) have partnered to offer an online course about translational science in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The course describes in detail a range of recent and ongoing research activities — from preclinical to clinical to population health — that were led or supported by NCATS in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through this lens, the course teaches students effective approaches and strategies in translational science that have been key to the success of these efforts and are generalizable to other translational research activities.

Students will learn about the myriad ways NCATS is contributing to research to address the COVID-19 pandemic and will leave the course equipped with a set of wide-ranging translational science strategies they can apply in their future work in translational research.

NEW: Call for Nominations for 2022 ODP Early-Stage Investigator Lecture

National Institutes of Health Office of Disease Control and Prevention. Early-Stage Investigator Lecture.

Nominations due October 29, 2021

The Office of Disease Prevention (ODP) is seeking nominations for our 2022 Early-Stage Investigator Lecture. The award is made annually to early-career scientists who have made significant research contributions in disease prevention but who have not yet successfully competed for an R01 or R01-equivalent National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grant.

The award winner will be invited to give a lecture at the NIH in 2022. The awardee will also have the opportunity to meet and network with NIH program directors and scientists. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the date and in-person status of the lecture will depend on travel and meeting guidance provided by the NIH.

CTSA PROGRAM NEWS AND UPDATES

Seeking New Steering Committee Members

NCATS is seeking nominations for new CTSA Program Steering Committee (SC) members! We are seeking 4 UL1 PIs and an administrator to serve on the committee for the next 3 years. If you would like to self-nominate or suggest a fellow PI, please submit the PI name, institution, and brief explanation (no longer than 1 paragraph) to Brittany Gibbons (brittany.gibbons@nih.gov) by Friday, October 10.

The eligibility criteria for SC appointments are as follows:

An Administrator is the key point of contact between their institution’s CTSA Program leadership and Program Directors, and NCATS personnel.
The PI must be officially named in the Notice of Grant Award of an active CTSA Program hub.
- An “active” award is defined as a hub award that is not in a No-Cost Extension (NCE). A PI whose hub award in a NCE is not considered eligible as there is insufficient time remaining in the award project period for initiation of an appointment
For both PIs and Administrator, their hub award must have at least 3 years remaining during the project period.
The PI has not served on the SC since December 2014. At the time the SC was reorganized in 2014, NCATS made a commitment to the consortium that all funded and eligible PIs will have the opportunity to serve 1 term before others have second-term appointments.
