Visiting Scholar Program

The Institute on Culture, Religion & World Affairs: CURA serves as an interdisciplinary meeting point for scholars and researchers in many fields, including anthropology, history, religion, literature, and more. CURA invites researchers and scholars worldwide to conduct research under the guidance or in collaboration with BU Faculty.

Both appointed researchers and the institute greatly benefit from the collaboration. Visiting researchers are granted full access to all Boston University library sources, including online sources, access to the Institute’s facilities, and a discount at the BU bookstore. The appointment gives researchers the opportunity to become actively integrated with and receive support from the Institute faculty that hail from around the world and from multiple disciplinary backgrounds. Additionally, researchers will be invited to attend faculty workshops, lectures, and all other Institute-sponsored events.

Appointments are for a one-year period with consideration for reappointment at the end of that period. The Institute cannot currently provide research funding or assistance with housing to appointed researchers.

Interested prospective visitors should send the following materials to the assistant director of the Institute at the address indicated below:

  • A letter requesting the Visiting Researcher appointment that describes the project and any support the person would like to receive from the Institute and BU if granted affiliation.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A CV no more than 3 months old.
  • Prospective visitors whose native language is not English should describe their experience and training in English and the degree of their proficiency with the English language. English proficiency is a significant factor in granting invitations. TOEFL and academic records may also be requested.

PhD is preferred for Visiting Researcher status, but exceptions may be made for advanced graduate students.
