BUSDM Celebrates 25th Annual Science Day and Night
BUSDM’s 25th annual Science Day and Night events last week showcased student research, helped the school community learn about advancements in the field and on the Medical Campus, and gave us a chance to celebrate our success in style.
Science Day, held last Thursday at 100 East Newton, featured vendor exhibitions, student poster presentations, oral presentations of student research, and a keynote presentation by Dr. Mark Klempner , associate provost for research at Boston University Medical Center, about the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL), the university’s new Biohazard Level 4 facility.
Friday brought the Science Night gala to downtown Boston’s Langham Hotel. The event featured an award ceremony for Science Day winners, a raffle sponsored by the BU chapter of the American Student Dental Association ( ASDA ), and plenty of refreshments, food, and dancing.

Poster Presentations
- Predoctoral students: Khadija Rhourida, research technician, Thomas Van Dyke and Robert Gyurko: “Gender-dependent modulation of osteoclast formation by inducible nitric oxide synthase.”
- Postdoctoral students: Hesham Al-Mashat PERIO 06, Suneel Kandru, Rongkun Liu, Yugal Behl, Tesfahun Desta and Dana Graves: “Diabetes impairs healing by enhancing caspase activity.”
- Postdoctoral fellows: Camille C. Siqueira, Thomas Van Dyke and Robert Gyurko: “p47phox activation and alveolar bone loss in hyperglycemic ins2akita mice.”
