Dr. Jennifer Soncini Publishes Amalgam Research in JADA

Dr. Jennifer Soncini, assistant clinical professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, reports amalgam restorations in children are more durable than resin-based restorations.
The findings of Dr. Soncini’s study, “The Longevity of Amalgam Versus Compomer/Composite Restorations in Posterior Primary and Permanent Teeth,” are published in the June issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) and are the result of the New England Children’s Amalgam Trial.
“In determining the restorative material of choice, the dentist should consider the important factor of longevity, because replacement of failed restorations is a burden to patients, practitioners and health care systems,” say Soncini and her team of researchers.
Soncini worked with Dr. Nancy Nairi Maserejian, research scientist at New England Research Institutes (NERI); Dr. Felicia Trachtenberg, NERI statistician; Dr. Mary Tavares, senior clinical investigator at The Forsyth Institute; and Dr. Catherine Hayes, professor and chair of the Department of Public Health and Community Service at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
