BUGSDM Faculty Election Results

Once the patient treatment centers closed and classes ended September 5, full-time BUGSDM faculty gathered in room G-301 to elect representatives to serve on the advisory search committee for the next Dean of the Goldman School of Dental Medicine. At the request of Medical Campus Provost Karen Antman, Dr. Thomas Van Dyke organized the meeting to elect three full-time faculty members to the advisory committee which will identify candidates for Dean.
Of the 17 members nominated to serve on the committee, faculty elected: Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Health Services Research Dr. Raul Garcia, Associate Dean for Advanced Education and International Programs Dr. Thomas Kilgore, and Chair of the Department of Periodontology and Oral Biology Dr. Frank Oppenheim.
Dr Kilgore says, "I am honored to serve on the committee and, along with Drs. Garcia and Oppenheim, to represent my colleagues at the Goldman School of Dental Medicine." Garcia agrees, saying, "I was honored to be selected to serve in this very important role."
In accordance with BU’s faculty handbook, Provost Antman initiated the formation of an advisory committee to search for the next Dean. The handbook mandates that the committee include: three GSDM faculty members, elected by full-time GSDM faculty; two faculty members from other schools at BU, to be elected by BU’s Faculty Council in the next two weeks; and three committee members selected by Provost Antman. Antman may appoint up to two additional BU students to the committee and will choose the chair from among committee members.
Once formed in late September, the committee will accept internal and external nominations for Dean. The committee will ultimately recommend at least one candidate for Dean to Provost Antman for selection by President Robert Brown and approval by the Board of Trustees.
