Perio/DPH Graduate Receives Two Prestigious Awards for BUGSDM Work

Research on the connection between periodontal disease and stroke in people 60 and older, conducted while a graduate student at BUGSDM, has earned Hyo-Jung Lee DPH 04 PERIO 05 two prestigious Korean dental awards.
Lee received awards for best paper by a junior faculty member at Seoul National University and best paper by a dentist under 35 from the Korean Dental Association. In addition, the Korean Dental Society awarded Lee a $2000 scholarship.
Lee received both awards for her thesis, The Association Between Cumulative Periodontal Disease and Stroke History in Older Adults, which she completed under the guidance of Associate Professor Dr. Martha Nunn. Lee also worked with Drs. Raul Garcia, Sok-Ja Janket, Judith Jones, and Ana Karina Mascarenhas, and Thayer Scott in the Department of Health Policy and Health Services Research. By examining data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), the team found an association between periodontal disease and stroke history.
Lee received a master of science in dentistry degree in Dental Public Health, working with program director Dr. Ana Karina Mascarenhas. Lee holds a certificate of advanced graduate study in Periodontology from BUGSDM.
