BUGSDM Faculty Present Posters at ADEA Annual Session

Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) Professor and Director of Predoctoral Restorative Dentistry Celeste Kong, Clinical Assistant Professor Frederick Hains, and Associate Professor and Director of APEX & Extramural Programs Madalyn Mann collaborated on two posters presented at the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Annual Session in Dallas, Texas held March 28 – April 2.

The first poster, presented by Mann was titled, Teaching Dental Students Case Presentation Skills: An Innovative Approach. In addition to Mann, Dr. Kong, and Dr. Hains, Assistant Professor and Associate Director of APEX & Extramural Programs Meg Loadholt and Assistant Professor Dr. Zori Rabinovitz also authored the poster. The poster discussed how developing a case presentation using an electronic template and a digital camera teaches dental students how to critically evaluate, diagnose, and present patient data in an organized and professional manner.

"From the pilot project that we conducted in 2003, BUGSDM now has all 4th year dental students present a case presentation with selected cases being presented at our Grand Rounds," said Mann. "The poster concept of teaching case presentations skills to predoc students was well received by dental educators from other dental schools who attended this poster presentation."

The second poster, presented by Dr. Kong was titled, Portfolio Presentations: Part of Competency Evaluations and was based on Dr. Kong’s ongoing portfolio project for DMD IV and AS II students. Prior to graduation, students are required to present a completed case, documented with photographs, that focuses on a fixed prosthodontic patient. Students must document everything from medical history to before and after pictures and present it in the format designed by the APEX & Extramural Programs Office and discussed in the first poster.

Dr. Kong determined that the portfolio project was a useful learning tool by surveying students who had completed it. "The students overwhelmingly thought that although the portfolio project entailed a lot of work, they learned more about the case in the process," said Dr. Kong. "Based on their reactions I thought it was important for BUGSDM to share the success of this project with our colleagues from other dental schools at the ADEA Annual Session."

“The posters presented by Ms. Mann and Drs. Hains and Kong were outstanding and they generated a great deal of interest by those who attended the poster presentation session of the meeting," said Dean ad interim Dr. Jeffrey Hutter. "We should all feel very proud of our educational endeavors at BUGSDM and the willingness of our faculty to share them with other educators and institutions.”
