Dr. Ana Karina Mascarenhas Elected Vice President of the AAPHD

Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) Director of the Dental Public Health Program was recently named Vice President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD). Prior to being named vice president, Dr. Mascarenhas served on the AAPHD Executive Council along with BUGSDM Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Health Services Research Dr. Raul Garcia and Professor and Chair of General Dentistry Dr. Judith Jones.
Dr. Mascarenhas was nominated for the role of vice president by Past AAPHD President and Professor and Associate Provost of UCLA School of Dentistry Dr. Kathryn Atchison.
"I was flattered to be nominated for Vice President of the AAPHD," said Dr. Mascarenhas. "The strong endorsement of Dr. Atchinson and also the support of all those who voted for me came as a pleasant surprise. I didn’t realize that I had that much support out there."
Dr. Mascarenhas looks forward to her new role adding, "My vision is that AAPHD be the lead organization for prevention, access, and evaluation nationally and internationally. We also need to focus on mentoring and recruiting more students, particularly disadvantaged and minority students, to the specialty."
Dr. Garcia added, "It is highly fitting that Dr. Mascarenhas’s peers have recognized her many accomplishments by electing her to this prestigious position. We are all very proud of her."
"Dr. Mascarenhas is highly deserving of this accolade," said Dean ad interim Dr. Jeffrey Hutter. "Her desire to give back to the community is an inspiration to all of us at BUGSDM."
