Dr. Donald Booth Retires After 38 Years of Service

Professor and former Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) Dr. Donald Booth retired on June 30 after 38 years of service. Dr. Booth joined the faculty at BUGSDM in 1970 as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. That same year he also joined the faculty of Boston University School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Surgery. In 1973, he was promoted to Professor at BUGSDM.

Over the course of his career Dr. Booth distinguished himself as a leader in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He served as President of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 1999-2000, President of the Massachusetts Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 1989 to 1991, and Chairman of the Massachusetts Dental Society in 1968. He was also a member of dozens of other professional societies including the Academy of Osseointegration, American Dental Association, and the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Booth held appointments at ten area hospitals including Boston Medical Center where he served as Chief of the Department of Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. As an integral member of BUGSDM he also served on numerous committees, including the Executive Committee, Accreditation Committee, and Curriculum Audit Task Force.

"The Goldman School of Dental Medicine and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery would not be what it is today without the guidance, dedication, and foresight of Dr. Donald Booth," said Dean ad interim Jeffrey Hutter. "Countless graduates of BUGSDM have benefited immensely from having him as a teacher and mentor. We wish him the best of luck in his retirement and we are grateful for all that he has contributed to the School over the last four decades."
