Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Resident Wins National Award

Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) resident Emily Greenbowe OMFS 09 has been announced as the winner of the 2008 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Straumann Resident Research Award for her research titled, Rigid Fixation of Infected Mandible Fractures. This nationally recognized award is sponsored by Straumann USA, and will be presented at the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington in September.
The award is designed to stimulate scientific research and publications among residents in accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery training programs. The AAOMS Committee on Continuing Education and Professional Development selects the winner(s), and the award includes a gift check for $2,000.00.
Greenbowe completed this research project under the mentorship of BUGSDM Associate Professor and Director of Oral Surgery at Boston Medical Center (BMC) Dr. Pushkar Mehra. The results of this research study helped establish a protocol for management of patients with infected lower jaw fractures. Use of this proposed protocol in the management of such patients has the advantages of lowering healthcare costs, decreasing inpatient hospitalization duration, and minimizing the number of surgical procedures. The research was performed using treatment records of patients with infected mandible fractures treated by Dr. Mehra in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at BUGSDM/BMC from 2000 to 2006.
"I am excited and honored to be chosen as the winner of this award," said Greenbowe. "I’d like to thank Dr. Mehra and Dr. David Cottrell for their guidance and assistance during my research. I look forward to adopting this protocol in Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and also in private practice following graduation."
