Alice Wang DMD 09 Presents Grand Rounds Case

Alice Wang DMD 09 presented her Grand Rounds case on January 22. Wang completed research for her presentation as part of 10-week externship rotation at Dental Health Works in Keene, New Hampshire. Her externship preceptor was Dr. Steve Hoffman.
"Overall it was a great experience and really opened my eyes to the need for dentistry in rural US and also the drastic difference in perception of oral health between metropolitan and rural areas," said Wang.
Wang’s case was a unique Grand Rounds presentation because it focused on a young, 17-year-old male patient with extremely poor oral hygiene. When Wang met the patient it was his first-ever trip to the dentist. The patient had a mouthful of caries among other issues and came to the dentist because one of his back teeth had broken and the sharp edge was bothering him.
Professor and moderator Dr. Carl McManama encouraged the audience to consider prevention, restoration, and occlusion as they viewed the case. Following Wang’s presentation the audience discussed the best way to get this patient to change the habits that were causing severe oral health issues at such a young age, including his 1 to 2-Liter a day soda habit.
