GSDM Student Honored at Science and Engineering Day

On March 31, Lucas Patrick DMD 10 was selected as winner of the Goldman School of Dental Medicine Dean’s Award at the Boston University Science and Engineering Day. Patrick accepted the $500 award for his work titled, "Comparison of flexural strength of resin-infused Y-TZP and glass-infused Y-TZP with fully dense Y-TZP," at a luncheon held last month.

Patrick was mentored by Associate Professor and Director of Biomaterials Dr. Russell Giordano while working on this research during his APEX I rotation and as part of the Intensive Research Program during his APEX II rotation.

"This is a very important area of investigation in biomaterials that is compatible with human oral tissues," said Professor and Director of the Predoctoral Research Program Dr. Maria Kukuruzinska.

Science and Engineering Day is intended to honor and celebrate research by BU graduate students. The event has grown significantly over the years to allow numerous participants from schools throughout Boston University to compete for a variety of awards.

"Science and Engineering Day is an excellent way to for GSDM students to connect with other graduate students at Boston University who have similar research interests," said Dean Jeffrey Hutter. "Lucas’s work stood out as thought-provoking and forward-thinking which is why he was selected to receive this year’s Dean’s Award. He should be very proud of this accomplishment."
