GSDM Community Gets Excited About Ethics

On Monday, October 25, Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), "Hit the Ground Running!" with a kick-off celebration for Ethical Fitness Training.

The celebration was split into two luncheon sessions hosted by Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter; Dr. Carl McManama, Chair of the Dean’s Council on Ethics and Professionalism (DCEP); and the members of the DCEP. As soon as students, faculty, and staff stepped off the elevator they were greeted with a festive atmosphere, inspirational music, and a very enthusiastic Dr. McManama—complete with his coach’s whistle.

Attendees were then encouraged to travel to each of the five stations highlighting one of the core values that comprise the recently unveiled GSDM Code of Ethics and featuring fun complimentary gifts. Lunch was also served and Dr. McManama discussed the five core values and presented an overview of what the GSDM community has to look forward to in the 2010-2011 "Year of Ethical Fitness".

"Beginning in January, we will start conducting ethical fitness training sessions," said Dr. McManama. "There will be lots of training sessions throughout the year at various times. Our goal is to get everyone— students, residents, faculty, and staff—to participate in the fitness training sessions." Dr. McManama continued. "I like to compare ethical fitness to physical fitness, with the understanding that we’re already in pretty good shape, but should always be trying to get in better shape (or stay in good shape)."

Institute for Global Ethics Director of the Center for Corporate Ethics Mr. Marty Taylor, who has been facilitating this process at GSDM, also spoke and commented on how pleased he was to see such an energized and enthusiastic crowd.

Dean Hutter added, "I am very proud of the GSDM Community for coming out full force in support of the Ethical Fitness Training Kick-Off. Our Code of Ethics is something that I take very seriously and I am excited to see that the sentiment is shared by so many of you."

Dean Hutter continued, "I look forward to the training sessions that will begin in January 2011. I also want to thank the members of the Dean’s Council on Ethics and Professionalism and the Ethical Fitness Trainers for the time and energy that they have dedicated to developing our new Code of Ethics and to the time and energy that they will continue to dedicate as they work to extend the ethical fitness training to the entire GSDM community."
