Dr. David Lustbader Receives Distinguished Alumni Award

Each year at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) Alumni Reception, an alumnus is presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award. This year, the award was presented to Dr. David Lustbader CAS 86 DMD 86 for his outstanding service to the School and the profession.
Dr. Lustbader completed the Boston University 7-year combined BA/DMD program in 1986, earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, while ranked third in his class.
After receiving his DMD, Dr. Lustbader completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical residency at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 1990. His training emphasized Orthognathic, TMJ, and reconstructive, implant, and pre-prosthetic surgery. He received many awards during this time, including: The Operative Dentistry Award in 1986; the Prosthetics Award in 1986; the Gold Foil Operators Award in 1986; the Alpha Omega Award in both 1985 and 1986; the Norman Welch Award for Medical Excellence; and the Pierre Fouchard Award in 1986.
As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Lustbader has practiced at Boston Medical Center, where he served as an Attending Surgeon in the Department of Surgery. He has also been the Chief of Service for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at both Carney Hospital and Milton Hospital.
Dr. Lustbader has held many leadership positions throughout his career. He is currently the President of the Massachusetts Dental Society and the Chair of the Dean’s Advisory Board (DAB) of the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, a position he has held since 2012; he has been a member of the DAB since 2010. He also currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of Nobel Biocare.
Previously, Dr. Lustbader served as Chairman of the South Shore District Dental Society; Allied Scientific Chairman of Yankee Dental Congress 23 from 1997-98; the General Arrangements Chairman, of Yankee Dental Congress 25 from 1999-2000; the Special Events Chairman of Yankee Dental Congress 27 from 2001-2002; the Hospitality Chairman of Yankee Dental Congress 29 from 2003-2004; the Registration Chairman of Yankee Dental Congress 35 from 2009-2010; the Secretary-Treasurer of the Massachusetts Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 2000-2002; the Vice President of the Massachusetts Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 2002-2004; the President of the Massachusetts Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 2004-2006; the Treasurer of Carney Hospital from 2000-04; the Vice President of Carney Hospital from January 2004-2006; the President and Chief Medical Officer of Carney Hospital from 2006-2008; Trustee of the Massachusetts Dental Society from 2010-2015; Vice President of the Massachusetts Dental Society from 2015-2016; and President-Elect of the Massachusetts Dental Society from 2016-2017.
Dr. Lustbader is also a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Alpha Omega Fraternity, the American Dental Association, American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, International College of Dentists, and the American College of Dentists.
Aside from practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Lustbader has given back to the profession in a variety of ways. He began his teaching career at SUNY Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine in 1988, and is now a Clinical Instructor at GSDM, a position he has held since 1995.
In presenting the award, Dean Hutter stated that Dr. Lustbader is a friend, colleague, faculty member, an alumnus, and now recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Alumni Award. Dr. Lustbader is married to Wendy Lustbader, who graduated with a B.A. from Boston University’s Sargent College in 1983, and from which, she completed her graduate degree at BU in 1984. Mrs. Lustbader currently serves on the Boston University Alumni Council (BUAC). The Lustbader’s have two children, Joshua and Allison, and although Josh was not able to be with his family, Ally was there as their father received his well-deserved award.
In closing his remarks, Dean Hutter recognized several special guests as being present at the award ceremony in support of their colleague and friend Dr. Lustbader in receiving his award. They were: Dr. Robert Boose, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Dental Society, and his wife Edwina; Dr. Michael H. Gu, business partner at South Shore Oral Surgery Associates; Dr. Deedee Gurin DMD 97 of Dentistry of Milton and a very close friend of
Dr. Lustbader; Dr. Janis Moriarty, Vice President of the Massachusetts Dental Society; Dr. Thomas Towbridge, Treasurer of Massachusetts Dental Association; Dr. Paul R. Wilson business partner at South Shore Oral Surgery Associates and his wife Tara; and Dr. Howard Zolot PERIO 85, President-Elect of the Massachusetts Dental Society.
