By Jason Stevens
Dr. Belinda Borrelli, Professor in the Department of Health Policy & Health Services Research at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, was named the 2017 Evans Center Research Collaborator of the Year by the Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research and the Boston University Department of Medicine. This recognition was announced at the annual Department of Medicine Awards Dinner on October 12, 2017 at the Colonnade Hotel.
The Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research promotes growth and discovery for interdisciplinary biomedical research through its dynamic organizational structure. It brings together investigators from different fields to study disease mechanisms and identify further opportunities for training and research. The Evans Center supports Affinity Research Collaboratives (ARCs), which are interdisciplinary teams of investigators focused on a research theme.
The Evans Center Research Collaborator of the Year Award is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to research collaboration at Boston University. After accepting nominations from peers, awards are determined by a special committee with support from the administration. Recipients such as Dr. Borrelli are selected for their leadership and strong collaborative and transdisciplinary efforts.
Dr. Borrelli launched the Mobile and Electronic Health Affinity ARC (ME-ARC) in January of 2016 and serves as the Director. Drs. Lisa Quintiliani and Julie Keysor are Co-Directors of the ME-ARC. The mission of the ME-ARC is to conduct state-of-the art research and training in mobile and electronic health in order to improve health and well-being, with a focus on underserved populations. The ME-ARC is transdisciplinary, and includes a 10-member steering committee and over 90 member affiliates across numerous schools at Boston University. Since its inception, the ME-ARC has invited speakers at monthly seminars, and hosts an annual ME-Health Symposium. The ME-ARC fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among Boston University researchers, provides training and mentorship to both faculty and postdocs, and serves as a resource for the BU Community.
“Congratulations to Dr. Borrelli on receiving this prestigious honor,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “It is an incredible achievement to be recognized by her peers for her work with the Mobile and Electronic Health Affinity ARC (ME-ARC).”
In addition to her being recognized for her collaborative efforts on the ME-ARC, Dr. Borrelli has also collaborated on numerous grants with colleagues in the Department of Medicine, School of Public Health, and GSDM despite being at Boston University for only three years. She also provides mentorship to students and junior faculty on both the medical campus and Charles River campus.
Dr. Borrelli is also the Director of Behavioral Science Research at GSDM, Visiting Professor at the University of Manchester, UK, and is Adjunct Professor at Brown University, at both the School of Public Health and the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior.
