The Orofacial Pain (OFP) Internship is a one-year program for dentists who want to expand their knowledge of the management of complex orofacial pain conditions. This program is also aimed to strengthen the trainee’s subsequent application for a formal OFP residency program by providing relevant clinical experience and adequate opportunity for relevant research in orofacial pain.

Goals and Objectives

This curriculum is designed to provide exposure to clinical management of patients with orofacial pain in an outpatient hospital-based setting.  Dentists  who complete the program will be prepared to treat a wide variety of patients with orofacial pain using a multidisciplinary approach. They will be able to apply concepts of patient and practice management and quality improvement in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Admission and Application Process

The 2025-2026 application cycle deadline is February 1, 2025.

The application process is conducted through the ADEA Post-doctoral Application Support Service (PASS).

The program is open to dentists graduating from CODA-accredited U.S./Canadian and also to non-CODA accredited international dental schools. Applicants will need to provide/complete: 

  • Personal statement demonstrating an interest in orofacial pain 
  • Curriculum Vitae 
  • Two letters of recommendation 
  • In-person interview 
  • TOEFL Scores: 91 or above 
  • NBDE Exam Scores: Pass (optional)   

Tuition

Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine charges tuition for all its postdoctoral training programs. For more information on postdoctoral tuition and fees, please visit the postdoctoral admissions page. 

There is no stipend available for this internship program.

Curriculum

This is a clinical program. Although administratively based out of GSDM, all clinical care and education will be at Boston Medical Center. The grades for all courses in this proposed program will be on a pass/fail score. This is consistent with the other internship and certificate programs run by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department.
