Overview:

Temporomandibular Joint disorders (TMDs) are often a source of non-dental pain in the orofacial region. Patients with pain in the orofacial area often seek treatment from a dentist. Therefore, dentists are frequently the first point of contact clinicians for patients with TMD  pain. The dentists must be well informed and have a good understanding of data gathering and clinical examination of such patients.

This course aims to provide general dentists as well as specialists adequate knowledge and understanding of TMDs, and, how to perform a comprehensive exam to diagnose and/or refer to such patients. The speakers will illustrate TMDs with case-based scenarios and give a hands-on demonstration on how to examine patients with TMD. They will demonstrate examination of the TMJ and associated craniofacial structures, facial and neck muscles. Also, this course will provide an understanding of sleep disorders, bruxism, and treatment approaches, including occlusal splint therapy and surgical interventions.

Objectives:

  • To understand the process of history, data gathering and clinical examination to diagnose TMD
  • To have a basic understanding of TMJ imaging interpretation
  • To understand how to establish a differential diagnosis of orofacial pain disorders and when to refer the patients for further evaluation
  • To understand sleep disorders and parasomnias like bruxism
  • To understand non-surgical and Surgical interventions to address TMD – Occlusal appliance therapy, Arthrocentesis, Arthroscopic Lysis + Lavage, Arthroplasty
