BU D&I is Hiring!
BU Diversity & Inclusion is hiring a Graduate Assistant (GA) who is passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion at Boston University. The GA will work closely with BU D&I’s professional staff in office administration, communications, and event planning. As part of the larger Community & Inclusion umbrella, the GA will also collaborate with colleagues in the BU Arts Initiative, the LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty & Staff, the Newbury Center, and Organizational Development & Learning.
In this role, the GA will gain experience in planning various types of programs, communications strategy, resource development, customer service, and administrative support within the context of diversity, equity, inclusion, and community building in a higher education setting.
The position can start on or after Monday, September 9, 2024 and will continue throughout the 2025 spring semester. The BU D&I Graduate Assistant position offers $20/hour for a range of 10-15 hours per week.
If interested, and contingent on performance, academic year GAs may be able to work summer hours, and a position for the 2025-2026 academic year may be available, as well.
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled at Boston University as a graduate-level student in good academic standing.
- Knowledge about communities holding marginalized identities, including multiple intersecting identities.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work in a community and inclusion office with individuals and groups with a wide array of backgrounds, identities, life experiences and communication styles.
- Ability to take initiative, problem solve, and work independently with good judgment about when to seek direction.
- Strong communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff and faculty at all levels across the university.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, and the ability to manage multiple ongoing projects.
- A working knowledge of higher education organizations and faculty needs.
- A strong interest in learning about and supporting the needs of faculty from historically excluded groups.
- Ability to recognize and protect confidential information and exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy in handling sensitive information and situations
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent communication skills to express ideas clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing
- Strong eye for design and a background in graphic design work. Please submit examples of past design work or a current portfolio
- Experience with social media management, whether professional or personal
Primary Responsibilities
In collaboration with the BU Diversity & Inclusion professional staff, the primary responsibilities are as follows:
- Provide administrative support and assistance in the planning and implementation of BU D&I programming and communications, including setting up and breaking down programs and events across campus and representing BU D&I at these events.
- Serve as the first point of contact when people enter the BU D&I office suite.
- Manage the front desk, office phone, and office email account, connecting people with the appropriate BU D&I staff and/or requested information.
- Develop resource and training materials and conduct research, as needed, for resource development and programmatic initiatives
- Write and design content for our:
- Social media (Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn)
- Website
- Visibility campaigns
- Event graphics
- Assist the Sr Communications Manager in planning and executing BU D&I’s communication strategy
