This place welcomed me and kept me smiling through my toughest seasons as a student at BU from 2004 to today. I was welcomed into Samba, African, Ballet, and Flamenco classes with no past experience or hesitation from staff or teachers. Their work-study program allows anyone to get a free dance class for each hour spent working at the front desk, which allows poor college students to do homework while connecting with the community and also exercise. The dance complex is located in Central Square, a 20-minute walk from campus. The range of people using it is so wonderful, all ages and cultures. I learned about the varying African dance styles and Latin American dance styles, watched dance performances of many cultures. The energy in that 100+year-old building is incredible. You can hear the African drums as you walk down Mass Ave. There are plenty of performance events outside of classes, so, always a reason to visit. You can observe any class or volunteer to drum. The mentors and friendships I found there helped with my student anxiety and made me feel like I was part of something great outside of BU. It is one of the many reasons I felt at home off campus and continued to invest in Boston area communities post-graduation.
