Boston University recently renewed its institutional subscription to MATLAB–a powerful application worth considering for classes or research projects involving data analysis, modelling, and/or programming.

Developed by MathWorks, MATLAB (MATrix LABoratory) is a dynamic desktop application that facilitates matrix algebra calculations and many other more specific computations and applications including, but not limited to: data analytics, machine learning, deep learning, image processing and computer vision, signal Processing, quantitative finance, risk assessment, robotics, and control systems.

MATLAB supports a Live Editor for creating scripts that combine code, output, and formatted text in an executable notebook. Additionally, it supports a wide array of graphical applications, ranging from bar charts, line and surface plots to volumetric rendering. And if you are having students submit MATLAB code for assignments, you can use the MATLAB Grader. Features include: autograded student solutions with custom scoring rubrics, individual and aggregate student performance analytics, and templates of common and advanced assessment types for both script and function-based problems.

If you are interested in learning more about MATLAB, please check out training resources in the MathWorks BU Portal. You can also download the application there if you sign in with your BU Credentials. Research Computing Services (RCS) has also created help pages specifically for using MATLAB on the Shared Computing Cluster (SCC) and offers tutorialson MATLAB. MathWorks also offers a number of more complex tutorials here
