Coffee & Conversation: MTV Ignite’s “Shuga” and the Cred for HIV/AIDS Outreach
Time to change the way we hook up? The flirting; the ask; the date; kisses; relationships; and, the way we talk about it. In this continuing age of HIV/AIDS, is the sex and intimacy status quo ancient? And, is the way we talk about it so out of place?
We’re going for something different. This Friday I’ve invited folk from the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and their Ignite campaign – a campaign spreading convo and info about lifestyles and HIV/AIDS – to the conversation. As part of their new campaign we’ll get to check out Shuga – one of their locally filmed dramas set in Kenya. I’ve peeped the episode. It’s about college-aged folk and their music, relationships, norms, love-life, hopes, and dreams. It’s also got a backdrop about HIV/AIDS and stepping up to personal responsibility. Good stuff, but can it earn enough juice to work as outreach on the issue?
See you this Friday, in the Howard Thurman Center from 3- 5 p.m. I’ve got the cookies and coffee, you come with the critical eye and the frank conversation.
Peace.
