Rain, Rain, Go Away: Taking care of your room when it rains
It’s raining. It’s windy. Walking to class is starting to make you feel like a fish.
When it comes to extended rain and wind, like the conditions we are having now, Residence Life has two important tips for you, no matter if you live on-campus or off.
- Keep all your windows closed and locked.
- Keep valuable items off window sills and floors.
If you end up having a leak or water-related damage in your room on-campus, report it to your local Residence Life office (office hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 7 p.m. to 12 midnight, seven days a week) or to the Facilities Management & Planning Emergency Desk at 617-353-2105. The emergency desk is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Say the weather is bad enough that your on-campus building loses power. If your residence loses power, Residence Life staff will have flashlights available. For fire safety reasons, please do not use candles or open flame items to light your room.
If you have chosen to live off-campus, make sure you have a working flashlight and that you know where exactly it is. (Because you will always forget where it is the exact moment you need it.) Keep the number of your power company stored in your phone to report a power outage. And even if you are off-campus, we still don’t recommend using candles to light your room (even if they are those good smelling pumpkin spice ones.) If you have weather-related damage in your apartment, tell your landlord ASAP.
Please stay safe and cautious during the upcoming stormy days, and feel free to contact your local Residence Life staff with questions or concerns.

When do you turn on the heat in the Dorm rooms? According to regulations it should be September 15th however it is not on in my daughter’s or surrounding dorms. How do you get the window locks fixed on your room so the windows stay closed? The windows do not stay closed and slide open.
Hi Linda –
If your student has difficulty with the temperature of her residence hall room, she should speak to her RA or the Facilities team in her residence hall. The same goes for window issues as well. They can help repair the locks.
Thanks!
