How to use BU ShareLink?

What is the purpose of ShareLink?

Once a student matriculates at Boston University, parents no longer have the same access rights to academic information as they did when the student was in elementary or high school. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, protects the student’s privacy regarding educational records, and therefore requires consent for the records to be released. Due to this law, students must utilize ShareLink if they would like to grant others access to their University records, which include financial information, proof of enrollment, and a transcript preview.

How do I sign up my parent/guardian for ShareLink?

Location: On the Student Link, select the purple “Personal” tab, under the heading “Manage Access to your Academic Information” then select “ShareLink Access.”

Student Instructions:

  1. Select “Add new Viewer” and enter the name and email address of the individual. Then select “SUBMIT”
  2. Once you submit, review the information and select “CONFIRM”
  3. Select the time period for which the individual will have access to the University records. When finished, select “SUBMIT”
  4. Review the confirmation message. The viewer will now be sent an email notifying them of the granted access.

Parent/Guardian Instructions

After the student grants you access, you will receive email notifications. The first contains information on setting up a BU Web Account, which you must do to access the shared records. The second informs you of which records have been shared, as well as the access duration. Use the shortcut link in the email or below to view the records.
