Professor Emeritus

On February 20th, 2020, Earth and Environment Emeritus Professor T.R. “Laksh” Lakshmanan passed away.  An institution builder at Boston University, Professor Lakshmanan was the Founder and Director of the Center for Transportation Studies and Founder of the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies at Boston University.  In addition, Professor Lakshmanan served as the Director of the Department of Transportation Statistics as a Presidential Appointee in the Clinton administration. Professor Lakshmanan was an eminent scholar; serving as a Fellow and Life member of Clare Hall at Cambridge University, recipient of the American Association of Geographers Anderson Medal and Ohio State Huntington Prize in Geography, editor of the Annals of Regional Science, Chair of the International Geographic Union, Vice President of the International Regional Science Association and President of the North East Regional Science Association. Both Professor Lakshmanan as well as his wife and research collaborator Lata Chatterjee were bedrock members of the academic community. Professor Lakshmanan was a larger-than-life personality with a giant heart to match – he is sorely missed.
