Dear Students:

Welcome to the Department of Earth & Environment! We’re pleased you’ve chosen to study here, and we welcome you to the community. We’ll do everything we can to make your time here successful. The Department takes great pride in its graduate students and will work with you to help you accomplish your research goals. In return, we expect you to hold your work to the highest possible standards.

Graduate school can be an extraordinarily rewarding experience. It can also be challenging, confusing, and demanding. We’ve put together this handbook to give you some guidance through Department and Graduate School requirements for the PhD in Earth & Environment. You should carefully also read the sections of the BU Graduate School Bulletin concerning deadlines and regulations. Finally, the handbook introduces resources available to you in the Department and at BU. BU is a large research university and therefore has many programs, centers, departments, and schools/colleges, and subsequently, many websites, which can sometimes make it hard to find what you are looking for. If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, contact Josh Maldonado. We’ll help make your graduate studies go smoothly, but ultimately you must be responsible for satisfactorily completing the work for your degree.

Sincerely,

Lucy Hutyra Professor, Chair

Andrew Kurtz, Associate Professor, Director of Graduate Studies
