This is the second of a pair of books by Robert Lane. The first was After the End of History: The Curious Fate of American Materialism, published by Michigan Press in 2006. It was the sixth book to appear in a series called “Evolving Values for a Capitalist World”, edited by GDAE Co-Director Neva Goodwin. In addition to serving as editor of the series, Dr. Goodwin worked closely with Dr. Lane on these two books.

This manuscript analyzes how markets shape and misshape the human personality, considering the way society, especially markets, influence consciousness, cognition, and emotions. This book is Volume 7 in the series Evolving Values for a Capitalist World.

Robert Lane is Eugene Meyer Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Yale University. He is a Fellow of the British Academy as well as the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was previous President of the American Political Science Association, as well as President of the International Society of Political Psychology. His previous publications include The Market Experience (1991), The Loss of Happiness in Market Democracies (2000), and Political Ideology (2008).
