Jonathan Harris and Anne-Marie Codur presented a paper entitled After COP28: The Bumpy Road to Net Zero at the 13th conference of the United States Society for Ecological Economics in Schenectady, N.Y., June 6-9, 2024. The presentation discusses the outcomes of the November 2023 United Nations climate conference COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Following a year of record heat and climate disasters, the urgency of strong climate actions is clear. In this context, the verdict on COP28 is mixed. Despite criticism of its shortcomings and inadequate carbon reduction pledges, there were real accomplishments and the global climate agenda is now more ambitious, with a goal of net zero global emissions by 2050, but daunting challenges remain.
