Guidance for Laboratory Relocation of Hazardous Materials

Environmental Health and Safety has developed the Guidance for Laboratory Relocation of Hazardous Materials document to assist all BU personnel involved in the relocation of hazardous laboratory materials such as Radioactive Materials, Hazardous Chemicals, Biological Materials and Controlled Substances to ensure that all such materials are relocated in a safe and compliant manner.

The document contains checklists which details a step-by-step processes addressing the communication and interaction between all parties involved in the relocation process.

This document was designed to be used as a guide to assist relocating hazardous materials between campuses, between buildings, or within the same building. The EHS Department Safety Adviser assigned to your laboratory can help customize the contents of this document to meet the needs of a particular move. Shipping Hazardous Materials

Environmental Health and Safety assists researchers, clinicians, and other members of the Boston University and Boston Medical Center community who need to ship hazardous materials.

EHS provides training and other services to ensure compliance with the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), regulating the transportation of materials within the United States, and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), regulating the transportation of these materials through airlines. EHS assists by determining whether materials meet the definition of dangerous goods, selecting labels and packaging material, and completing documentation.

EHS has personnel certified to ship these materials to meet DOT and IATA regulations. EHS offers different services for the following categories of dangerous goods:
