BTEC and BDC Host Women Leaders in Science

The Bioengineering Technology & Entrepreneurship Center (BTEC) and the Biological Design Center (BDC) jointly hosted Women Leaders in Science, an event that drew more than 70 BU graduate students for dinner and networking with the board of the American Association of University Women (AWIS) and with members of New England Women in Science Executives (NEWISE).

Speakers included Joanne Kamens, a consultant at Diversity North Group, and Yaelle Zigelman, a scientist at LifeMine Therapeutics and President-elect of AWIS.

“The event brought together women leaders at all levels, and highlighted the importance of mentoring and networking throughout one’s career,” said BTEC Executive Director and Professor of the Practice Diane Joseph-McCarthy (BME), who is also co-chair of the board of NEWISE. “The graduate students were able to interact with a range of scientists and engineers from those who were five years out of school to seasoned life science executives, and to make valuable connections.”

“It was truly a remarkable meeting that brought together women from various career stages, fostering connections, inspiration, and support,” said Anna Barnacka, CEO at MindMics.

PhD student Ayse Bekar said, “There were a lot of great take home messages, like don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, and that growth comes from getting out of your comfort zone.”
