MSE Students & Alumnus Awarded for Research & Academic Accomplishments
Three current and former MSE PhD students have recently been recognized internally and externally for their notable academic and research achievements. With the support of their professors, they have made valuable contributions to both the Division of MSE and the College of Engineering, and the Division is proud to celebrate their awards.
Chloe Kekedjian received the 2023 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Award. Selected from a pool of over 3,080 applicants, she was awarded for her academic excellence and STEM achievements. On top of a $3,600 monthly stipend, the award guarantees full tuition and coverage of all mandatory fees for up to three years at any accredited U.S. college or university that provides advanced degrees in science and engineering.
Lu Ping received the Boston University Women’s Council Award, a prize given to remarkable women pursuing careers in scholarship, teaching, the arts, finance, or fundamental research and seeking to improve their communities. Ping’s research focuses on 2D materials synthesis, characterization, and device development for next-generation 2D optoelectronics. The $5,000 award was presented to Ping on May 15, 2023, at the annual BU Women’s Guild lunch.
Tianshu Li received the 2023 Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Outstanding Dissertation Award for his paper, “2D non-van der Waals transition metal carbides and nitrides: from synthesis to electronic applications.” A recent graduate from the BU College of Engineering Division of MSE, Li’s research focused on synthesizing and characterizing 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides that are non-van der Waals crystals and hard to access using conventional synthesis methods. Among other things, Li’s achievements include using Raman spectroscopy to understand the structure of this class of materials.
