Interim Dean Elise Morgan has appointed Professor Ayse Coskun (ECE, SE) as ENG’s interim associate dean for research and faculty development. In this role, Coskun will support the college’s research enterprise in part by promoting convergent projects and an overall culture of collaboration. She will work to recruit and retain faculty who are committed to working across disciplinary lines to solve society’s pressing problems.
“Having served as part of the college’s executive committee previously, she is well suited to hit the ground running,” Morgan wrote in a letter to the ENG community. Morgan, who is the Maysarah K. Sukkar Professor of Engineering Design and Innovation, had herself been serving as the associate dean for research and faculty development until she took on ENG’s interim deanship upon Kenneth Lutchen’s appointment as BU’s interim provost and chief academic officer
“I am excited to take on the responsibility as the AD of research and faculty development,” says Coskun, “and I aim to continue reinforcing the collaborative culture of ENG that enables innovating in convergent research topics and making strides in solving challenging societal problems. This position has evolved to include faculty development, such as providing support for junior faculty through several programs ENG started, which I look forward to engaging.”
Coskun will continue serving as the director of the Center for Information and Systems Engineering and pursuing her own research, which encompasses topics in embedded systems, energy-efficient computing, and high-performance computing, among others. Her work has been cited more than 5,000 times.
Currently the deputy editor-in-chief for IEEE Transactions on Computer Aided Design and associate editor for ACM Transactions on Architecture and Code Optimization, Coskun has also served terms as associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Computers and on the executive committee of the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation.
Coskun has also served as ENG’s interim associate dean for educational initiatives. In that role, she oversaw the design and implementation of several key initiatives, such as advancing the college’s capacity to infuse data science throughout the undergraduate curriculum.
“This wealth of research and leadership experience in key areas related to our convergent themes will serve her well in this new role,” wrote Morgan. “Additionally, her experience working with faculty, staff, and students across BU, and in faculty hiring and mentoring, will be equally important in continuing our College’s efforts in faculty development and success.”
