BU MSE-GSA Organizes Informative Tour of Greentown Labs for Graduate Students

The Boston University MSE-GSA recently organized a tour of Greentown Labs (GTL) in Somerville, MA, offering graduate students a unique and enlightening experience. During the visit, students had the opportunity to explore various lab spaces, including those of AeroShield, A&I Power, Form Energy, and Sol Clarity Lab. A highlight of the tour was a hands-on demonstration at Sol Clarity Lab, allowing participants to engage directly with innovative technology.

Dr. Ryan Eriksen, BU MSE Alumnus, Sol Clarity CEO and Co-Founder, and ASM Boston Executive Committee Member, led the tour. He shared, “Being a BU alum, I know what it feels like to be a student and face the anxiety and unknowns of life after graduation. Tours like this can help alleviate uncertainty, but the greatest gain is the networking. I enjoy meeting students I might interact with in the future, and I encourage them to connect with professionals, which is what ASM aims to facilitate.”

Through insightful questions posed by the students, the tour expanded their understanding of the startup ecosystem and the intricacies of launching tech ventures. Additionally, it revealed potential job opportunities within the startups, making the experience particularly valuable.

Toluwalope John, a 3rd-year ME PhD candidate and BU MSE-GSA ME representative, commented, “Overall, it was an enlightening session that offered a fresh perspective beyond the traditional lab experience.”

Emily Ghosh, a 3rd-year MSE PhD candidate, BU MSE-GSA President, and ASM Boston Vice Chair, added, “Our connections with alumni and ASM Boston enable us to participate in tours like this. It’s incredibly valuable for students to connect with companies in the area and see the work that exists outside the academic realm, showing how approachable it can be.”
