by Allison Kleber

Congratulations to ECE PhD candidate Hayk Gevorgyan, winner of a 2021 Emil Wolf Outstanding Student Paper Award from Optica (formerly the OSA). His paper, “Frequency Translating Add/Drop Filters based on Electro-Optically Modulated Photonic Molecules,” was presented at the Frontiers in Optics and Laser Science virtual conference on November 2, 2021. More information about the paper can be found here.

Gevorgyan is a member of Professor Miloš Popović’s lab, which was well-represented at the conference with five paper presentations. A fellow advisee, PhD candidate Josep M. Fargas Cabanillas, was also a finalist for the award with his paper, “Rapid Adiabatic 3 dB Coupler with 50±1% Splitting Over 200 nm Including S, C and L Bands in 45 nm CMOS Platform” (more information available here).

The Emil Wolf Outstanding Student Paper Award recognizes innovative student research and excellent conference presentation skill. Awards are given in six categories, and are accompanied by a $300 prize. This year’s 20 finalists were selected from the 229 papers accepted to the FIO+LS conference, and winners chosen based on both the content of their paper, and the competence with which they presented their findings.
