Health Requirements and Insurance FAQ
Do I need health insurance?
Yes, you will be required to have health insurance while at Boston University as part of your compliance requirements. All students at Boston University enrolled in at least 3/4 of a full-time course load and all international students are enrolled in Boston University’s medical insurance plan. The annual premium for the cost of the BU insurance plan will appear on the Fall semester bill for students who are automatically enrolled.
Health Insurance
- Boston University requires that all full-time, certified full-time, and part-time students that are enrolled for at least 75% of the fulltime course load, and all international students with visa codes J-1 and F-1, and J-2 and F-2 be covered by an approved health insurance plan.
- You will automatically be billed for enrollment in SHIP at the BASIC level, with an option to upgrade to the PLUS plan level. If you have your own ACA compliant health plan which provides comprehensive coverage in the Boston area, you may submit a Medical Insurance Waiver (available on the Student Link) by the open enrollment deadline. Waivers of SHIP apply to the current plan year only.
- BU SHIP is provided by Aetna Student Health. Coverage for students enrolled in the annual plan will be effective from August 15, 2018 to August 14, 2019.
